Betamax VOIP Services

This information has found a new home!

As I had previously announced, I am no longer able to maintain this information.

Fortunately, it has found a new home at MyVoipProvider, which has lots of other information, including a frequently updated table of the free destinations offered by the various Betamax services.

A big thank you to everyone who has sent me updates and other information, and I hope that you will support the new maintainers of the page at MyVoipProvider as well.

Sincerely,

Wolf Paul

P.S. Since people keep asking me why I stopped using Betamax VoIP services, here is a quick explanation:

  • They don’t offer an automatic payment option. Because they don’t, it is up to me to check my credit regularly to avoid my family being unable to place a call because there’s no credit left. Frankly, I have better things to do.
  • They no longer offer VoIP-IN numbers in Austria, and the ones they issued after the Austrian Telecom Regulator told them to turn off the geographic numbers they had issued in contravention of the rules never worked right (couldn’t be called from most networks). My family prefer that their outgoing calls have a CLID number that can be called back.
  • It just got real tedious to try and communicate with Betamax and/or Finarea. I recommended them to some friends of mine who then had issues with them; all attempts to resolve these have proved futile. I still don’t think these guys are fraudulent; they just have a totally unacceptable attitude with regard to customer service and customer satisfaction. I know that a shoestring operation cannot afford to spend much money on service; but this is not a question of money but of attitude.
